We asked an expert to break down the biggest myths about women's health and explain how Oscar helps you take charge of your screenings and care.
As a woman, it can feel like the health guidance you're supposed to follow keeps shifting just when you've finally gotten used to it. From new screening recommendations to updated testing guidelines, the right approach seems to change every day.
Oscar is here to help you make sense of it. We sat down with Oscar’s Dr. Bahar Sedaratim M.D. to cut through the noise and help you walk into your next visit feeling prepared.
If you could pick the "big three" health priorities for women this year, what would they be?
Dr. Bahar Sedarati: I suggest these three goals. First, stay on top of your health tests. This includes mammograms, cervical cancer tests, and bone scans. These help catch changes early.
Second, track how you feel like it is important data. Watch your weight, your mood, and how you sleep. This helps you speak up for yourself when you talk to your doctor.
Third, try to build muscle by lifting weights two to four times a week. Many people focus only on cardio. But during menopause, strength is the goal. It helps your metabolism and keeps your bones strong.
You mentioned screenings. How can women feel more ready for a doctor's visit?
Dr. Bahar Sedarati: Being ready is the best way to get the care you need.
Start with a "cheat sheet" for your tests. Most women need a Pap test every three to five years. Mammograms usually start at age 40, but you might start earlier if your family has a history of cancer. You should also plan for a bone scan. This usually starts at age 65, but it can be earlier if you have finished menopause.
Bring a log that tracks your sleep and mood. Do not be afraid to ask about all your choices, including medicine or other ways to help with sleep and mental health. Lastly, know your basic numbers like your weight and blood pressure. This helps you and your doctor watch for changes. It is best to get care early before symptoms feel bad.
What is one thing people get wrong about menopause?
Dr. Bahar Sedarati: The biggest myth is that you just have to "wait it out." You do not have to suffer. In the past, women were told their symptoms were just "part of getting older." But "getting through it" is not the same as suffering through it.
Modern care treats menopause as a way to prevent future health problems. It is a time when your brain and body find a new balance. Getting help early is a game-changer. There are many ways to help you through this change.
How does Oscar help women during this time of life?
Dr. Bahar Sedarati: We made a plan called HelloMeno (opens in new tab). It helps remove the roadblocks to getting special care for menopause. It treats this time as a journey, not just a list of problems to fix.
