Open Enrollment (opens in new tab) often starts with comparing premiums, deductibles and provider networks. Those details do matter. But it’s just as important to consider what happens after you enroll.
The truth is your health plan matters most when something unexpected happens. The right coverage can help you get the care you need faster, navigate difficult decisions with confidence, and stay focused on what matters most.
For these three Oscar members, that support showed up in different ways – from finding answers during a cancer diagnosis to gaining clarity when expert opinions conflicted, and maintaining continuity of care during a coverage transition.
Finding support after a life-changing diagnosis: Nicole's story
Nicole was studying ultrasound because she wanted to help catch medical problems early. During a classroom scan, her instructor noticed swollen lymph nodes under Nicole's arm. The finding led to a Stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis.
The diagnosis was frightening. So was the thought of paying for treatment. As a full-time student, Nicole worried cancer would force her to put both school and her future on hold.
Instead, she used the Oscar app (opens in new tab) to search for in-network providers and found imaging appointments weeks sooner than her original referrals. Her specialty chemotherapy medications were approved without delays, and when her first infusion bill arrived, a $65,000 charge was reduced to her plan's cost share. Rather than spending her energy worrying about medical bills, she could focus on treatment.
Guidance through a fragmented healthcare system: Julianne's story
In the span of four months, Julianne underwent surgery for a serious finger injury, received an endometrial cancer diagnosis that led to a hysterectomy, had a thyroid procedure and faced a new round of testing after a long-standing condition began to change. Specialists offered conflicting opinions, and each seemed focused on one piece of the puzzle.
"I felt like in medicine, nobody has the time," she said.
An email from Oscar offering a nurse consultation connected Julianne with the Care Management program. Her care managers helped her find in-network providers, locate facilities with available appointments, work through paperwork and prescription issues, and understand the difference between provisional and confirmed diagnoses.
"It made me feel a little bit less alone in a way that a family member can't do," Julianne said. "Having someone there to assure me, 'No, this is normal,' or 'Wait, this isn't right,' was invaluable."
Keeping care on track through a family transition: Scott's story
When Scott's wife finished her medical fellowship, the family's health coverage ended with it. With two young children and appointments already on the calendar, Scott began searching for a marketplace plan that would let them keep their pediatrician. Finding that their doctor's office accepted Oscar gave him an immediate sense of relief.
Soon after enrolling, Scott noticed the family's coverage was set to begin a month later than they needed. Expecting a long, frustrating process, he instead reached someone quickly who corrected the start date. His family was able to keep seeing the providers they trusted without interruption.
"We can take solace in that all four of us are taken care of," Scott said.
For Scott, the experience was memorable enough to become part of his work as a poet. During a poetry night, he joked about "sneaking around with another provider" before revealing that the object of his affection was Oscar Health, a punchline that landed because the relief behind it was genuine.

What to consider during Open Enrollment
Open Enrollment is a chance to think beyond the monthly premium. Consider whether a plan includes the doctors you trust, offers tools that make it easier to find care and provides help when the healthcare system becomes difficult to manage.
Nicole found appointments sooner and coverage that eased the financial burden of cancer treatment. Julianne found care managers who helped untangle a confusing series of diagnoses and next steps. Scott kept his family's pediatrician and resolved a coverage issue before it disrupted their care.
Those experiences won't show up in a plan comparison chart. But when life doesn't go according to plan, they're often the things that matter most.
