Your body is a complex machine, and just like a car needs the right oil pressure to keep the engine running smoothly, your body needs the right blood pressure to keep you healthy.
Think of your arteries as a garden hose connected to your heart. Blood pressure is simply the measurement of how much force is pushing against the walls of that hose. When that pressure stays too high for too long, it can wear things down. But don't worry: getting a handle on your numbers is one of the smartest things you can do for your long-term health.
Decoding the numbers: What’s "normal"?
When you see those two numbers on your screen (like 120/80), it’s not just random math.
The top number (systolic): This is the pressure when your heart contracts and pushes blood out. It’s the "active" number, which is why it’s higher
The bottom number (diastolic): This is the pressure when your heart is relaxing and filling back up
Stage 1 Hypertension: Top is 130–139 OR bottom is 80–89
Stage 2 Hypertension: Top is 140+ OR bottom is 90+
Getting the perfect reading at home
Because blood pressure can change based on stress or even that morning cup of coffee, getting an accurate reading at home is key. Here is how to do it like a pro:
Relax: No caffeine, exercise, or smoking for 30 minutes before you check. Sit quietly for five minutes first.
Make sure you have the right setup: Sit with your feet flat on the floor (don't cross your legs!) and rest your arm on a table at heart level
Make sure you keep skin to cuff: Make sure the cuff is on your bare arm, not over a sleeve. The tube should run down the center of your arm, ending just above the bend of your elbow.
Frequently asked questions
What if I get a high reading once?
Don't panic! One high number doesn't always mean you have high blood pressure. Stress or being nervous can cause a "false" spike. Take a few deep breaths and try again in a few minutes.
When is it an emergency?
If your reading hits 180/120 or higher, that’s "Hypertensive Urgency." Call your doctor right away. If you have a high reading plus a bad headache, chest pain, or shortness of breath, head to the ER immediately.
How can I lower my numbers?
Small changes make a big difference! Try a low-salt diet, aim for regular aerobic exercise (like a brisk walk), and find a stress-buster that works for you, whether it’s yoga, meditation, or just a good book.
