The "sticker shock" of an unexpected prescription cost or the realization that a medication requires a prior authorization can create significant friction in a member’s healthcare experience. In fact, pharmacy-related inquiries remain one of the highest drivers of inbound calls for insurance carriers nationwide.
Recognizing this, Oscar recently launched a new drug pricing tool to bring total transparency to the pharmacy counter. By integrating real-time pharmacy benefits data directly into the member portal and mobile app, Oscar is moving away from static lists and estimated costs toward a system that provides real-time drug pricing that into members' deductible status, prescription dosage, supply, and pharmacy.
"Prescription drug coverage information is something that members are constantly coming to our app to check, but it's an experience that has needed a refresh," said Ailin Zeng, a product lead at Oscar. "We’re pulling real-time pricing directly into Oscar, so members can see that final price within our digital experience."
Eliminating the surprise at the pharmacy counter
Members can search for a medication, select their prescribed dosage, and see a clear breakdown of coverage requirements. This replaces dense, 100-page PDF drug formularies with a simple interface that brings clarity to the member’s specific needs.
