At Oscar, our mission is to make a healthier life affordable and accessible for all. As we look for ways to get there, we have been paying close attention to our Spanish speaking communities. Hispanic and Latino people make up about 20% of the US population (opens in new tab), yet their healthcare needs are often unmet. When compared with their White counterparts, they experience 30-40% worse health outcomes (opens in new tab) and are twice as likely to be uninsured. Additionally, 46% of Hispanic/Latino adults (opens in new tab) report they have a close friend or family member who needs a Spanish-speaking healthcare provider or translator. These numbers only confirm this community has been overlooked and deserves a healthcare experience designed around their unique needs. That’s precisely why we developed Hola Oscar, a program built by Spanish-speaking teams to offer deeper support to our ever-growing Hispanic and Latino members.
As of 2023, Spanish-speakers make up more than one third of Oscar’s member base — and we’re proud to serve them. We’ve deepened our commitment to the community by creating a program to help them get the most out of their health plans — and navigate a health system that’s English-first. When we create a Spanish-first approach to healthcare, we're hoping to give the Hispanic and Latino communities care that actually meets their needs and changes their health outcomes for the better.
