Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we have increasingly witnessed clear disparities in health care and how, oftentimes, historically underrepresented populations bear the burden of an unequitable system.
We have also seen what creating a more accessible and equitable health care system can do for our society.
Oscar's priority has been to make sure each member gets the right care at the right time without worrying about common barriers such as cost and language differences. Recently, we kicked off a series of initiatives in support of a culturally competent care framework (opens in new tab).
This year, we’re launching a series of panel discussions with leaders focusing on increasing access to health care to historically underrepresented populations.
For this discussion, Oscar Florida Sales Leader, Madeleine Arritola, is joined by Hispanic Unity of Florida (opens in new tab) — an Oscar Culturally Competent Care grantee — CEO Felipe Pinzon and Gloria Pacheco, a member of our in-house clinical team Oscar Medical Group, to have a conversation about increasing access to care in south Florida.
During this episode, Madeleine, Felipe, and Gloria discuss how COVID-19 continues to affect Hispanic and Latino communities in southern Florida as well as issues related to vaccine hesitancy. The group also discusses the importance of building trust through community health education and how community-based organizations can help to break down barriers that may deter individuals from receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.
Hispanic Unity of Florida is on a mission to ease the acculturation transition for newcomers from other nations. The organization provides assistance through 12 programs and 30+ services in 4 languages to South Florida's diverse community.
