In recognition of National Nurses Week, we want to highlight Beth Siwicki, a Clinical Quality Registered Nurse (RN) at Oscar. Beth shares her background, what drove her to become a nurse, and how integrating technology into her practice has helped her treat patients.
Beth Siwicki, Clinical Quality RN, from the Quality & Training team writes:
What inspired you to become a nurse?
The lifesaving nursing care I received when my children were born inspired me to leave my tenured teaching position and become a registered nurse. I was gifted with a new appreciation of the sacredness of life and a profound desire to take care of others at their most vulnerable moments. Moreover, I was galvanized to do for others what the nurses had done for me: save a life. I became a bedside nurse at the same health system where my life had been saved, wearing many hats as charge nurse, preceptor and Safety Coach, served on the Patient Safety Quality Committee, and achieved board certification in my specialty. I became the nurse educator for the service line a few years later.
Why did you want to be a nurse at Oscar?
After relocating from Connecticut to Florida, I was looking for a new challenge and knew I wanted to make an impact in two main ways: prevent hospitalizations and eliminate disparities through healthcare navigation, education, and empowerment. Working alongside the Clinical Outcomes leader, I’d learned a lot about integrating technology with quality of care and patient outcomes. When I came across the Nurse Case Manager job posting, I discovered the world of virtual patient care and case management - now this could help prevent hospitalizations and break down healthcare disparities! I was intrigued by Oscar’s full stack technology platform, and their “relentless focus on serving [their] members.” The word “relentless” struck me, because that’s exactly how I would describe my own focus on improving patient outcomes - relentless. I had never felt so welcomed, impressed and challenged during an interview process and I was thrilled to join the Florida Case Management Team and support Oscar’s mission.
