A look into Oscar’s 2019 Internship program

This summer, we brought on 18 interns to work on impactful projects across our Software Engineering, Product Management, and Marketing teams in our NYC headquarters. Our goal is to make sure our interns get the most out of the Oscar experience during the 12 weeks they’re here. The internship is action packed with programming that includes 1:1 mentorship, professional development workshops, social intern-only events, and volunteering opportunities. Here’s a look at how it went this summer.

Hit the ground running from day one

Starting the first day, our interns learned about the health care industry and what each of our teams here are doing here to rebuild it. Our motto is, “You don't have to have experience in health care – you just have to want to fix it.”

Each of our interns joined our week-long onboarding program where they went through their team’s specific trainings to ensure they had a strong foundation. We want to make sure our interns have a good understanding of all things Oscar, from our codebase to any health care lingo.

Then we jumped in and began the mentorship program. To set them up for success, each intern was placed on a team of 4-5 members and paired with an intern manager to provide weekly feedback. Our software engineering interns were also paired with an “engineering buddy” who was there to provide an additional layer of support.

We take feedback and setting goals seriously at Oscar. That’s why we have our interns go through our formal performance review process, including midsummer and end-of-summer reviews to make sure they’re hitting their goals. We want to make sure our interns are growing throughout their time at Oscar.
