A waiting period is a duration of time between when an employee is hired and when they're eligible to sign up for health benefits.
As an employer, you have the right to enforce a waiting period on new employees before they’re able to sign up for health insurance and other company-sponsored benefits.
Legally, the maximum waiting period you can set is 90 days. Some insurance companies have their own rules around waiting periods as well. Before setting (or changing) your company’s waiting period policy, check with your insurance broker (opens in new tab) to ensure your employees will be able to sign up for insurance plans within the designated deadline.
