Small groups are defined as employers with 50 or fewer full-time equivalent employees.
Under the Affordable Care Act, small groups are defined as employers with 50 or fewer full-time equivalent employees (opens in new tab).
However, some states – California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, New York, and Vermont – extend the definition of small group to 100 full-time equivalent employees.
The types of health insurance plans available to small and large groups are different, so if you’re getting close to the large group threshold, talk to your broker (opens in new tab) or health insurance company about your options.
