Health insurance plans fall into two primary categories: individual and group.
An individual plan is one you choose and purchase directly, either through a government-run Marketplace or directly through an insurer. You’re responsible for paying premium costs every month from your own bank account.
A group plan is one your employer provides on your behalf. Your employer will often pick a few plans for you to choose from. Many employers contribute money toward your premium payments as a benefit. The rest of your premium costs comes straight out of your paycheck (pre-tax).
