High deductible health plans (HDHPs) typically have a lower monthly premium and a higher deductible.
For 2020, the IRS defined an HDHP as a plan with a deductible of $1,400 or more, and an out-of -pocket max of $6,900 for individuals. For a family plan to qualify as HDHP, it must have a deductible of $2,800 or more and an out-of-pocket max of $13,800.
You can combine an HDHP with a health savings account (HSA) (opens in new tab), which lets you pay for qualified medical expenses with pre-tax dollars.
