When two insurance companies coordinate with one another to pay benefits for the same person.
Health insurance companies are required to follow specific coordination of benefits (COB) procedures when a person is covered by more than one health plan. The insurance companies work together to determine how much each plan should pay.
Since some people may have multiple health plans, COB is necessary to avoid having the same bills paid twice. There are many situations where a person may be duly insured—common examples include having insurance through your employer and secondary insurance from your spouse’s health plan, or a child of divorced parents may be covered by each parent’s plan, or a person may be covered by a Medicare plan and as well as a private insurance plan.
COB can get complicated, so you should always check your plan’s explanation of coverage for details. If you’ve got questions about your Oscar plan, contact your Concierge team in the Oscar app or your online account, or give us a call at 1-855-672-2755.
