We have a $3 drug list–here’s how to use it
Meds shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg. So, we did some math and found ways to reduce drug costs to $3* or less for many common conditions.

If you’re prescribed a new medication, simply ask your provider if there’s a $3 option that works for you. Keep the list handy, so you’ll always know the costs of your meds.

Just because a drug is generic doesn’t mean it’s less effective. The FDA makes sure the same active ingredients are present in the generic substituted product and that the generic drug is as effective as the equivalent brand drug. (The only thing that’s really different are the inactive ingredients.)
Many of the meds on the $3 list are generic versions of a brand drug. And if you’re switching to a generic medication, your pharmacist can easily make the switch for you.
If you’re switching to a therapeutic alternative — meaning a different drug with similar effects — you’ll need to talk to your doctor. If the switch is right for you, they’ll just need to write you a new prescription for the more affordable alternative.
Good news! Yes. Drugs on the $3 list will always be $3, whether you’ve hit your deductible or not.

Don’t worry. If your prescription drug isn’t covered, ask your doctor if there’s another, similar drug that’s covered. Usually there’s a lower cost alternative available.
If there isn’t an alternative, your doctor can ask Oscar to make an exception. Here’s how:
1. Send in a drug prior authorization (opens in new tab) electronically through the EMR/ePrescribing system.
2. Send it via fax at (844) 814-2259 (for specialty drugs) or (844) 814-2258 (for non-specialty drugs).
3. Or send the request to us by calling (855) 672-2755.
Oscar tip! Usually Oscar only approves your request for an exception if the alternative drugs on the formulary would not be as effective in treating your condition. We may also approve of the exception if the drug would cause you to have adverse medical effects.
Sometimes you want to see an estimate for a prescription drug before you pick it up. Here’s how.
1. Log into your Oscar account (opens in new tab).
2. Search the prescription drug (opens in new tab) in the search bar.
3. Select the appropriate drug variation, and the cost will be shown based on three different circumstances:
- Before you have met your deductible (opens in new tab)
- After you have met your deductible
- After your maximum out-of-pocket (opens in new tab) has been met
