Making health insurance easier to navigate
While questions like “Is my urgent care visit covered?” or “Can I get an X-ray without prior authorization?” may seem simple, answering them accurately can be surprisingly difficult. Oscar has built a suite of tools to navigate the complex U.S. healthcare system but mapping the many possible paths of a member’s care journey still requires thinking through a wide array of intricacies.
AI can automate and simplify that. Today, we’re announcing Superagent, an AI intelligence layer designed to give members faster, clearer answers to their health insurance questions. Powered by GPT and built on a suite of specialized sub-agents, Superagent can understand natural-language questions, search trusted internal data sources, and generate accurate responses with speed and confidence. We believe it’s the first healthcare AI that can operate health insurance systems in real time.
Built for clarity, speed, and trust
What began as a prototype during an internal hackathon has evolved into a system capable of supporting thousands of real-world member inquiries. Superagent is designed to deliver three key benefits:
Access: Members get answers around the clock, without waiting for business hours.
Speed: Responses are generated in seconds, even during peak seasons like Open Enrollment.
Accuracy: Superagent operates the same internal systems that check our benefits, pay our claims, determine provider network status, and so on. It references that information against plan documents, internal knowledge bases and simulation tools.
Just as importantly, Superagent improves the experience for our internal teams. By handling routine questions automatically, it frees up Care Guides to focus on more complex issues that require human judgment and empathy.
What’s next for Superagent
Today’s AI bots often handle only one question at a time before handing them off to a human. But real conversations are more fluid.
We’ve developed a triage and orchestration layer that allows Superagent to handle multi-part questions, breaking them down, routing each part to the right sub-agent, and then recombining them into one seamless, clear response. This unlocks a more natural, seamless experience for members.
In the coming months, we expect to launch additional subagents and other functionality that will allow us to support more types of member needs, including answering wellness and clinical care questions, understanding more member intents, and helping with common tasks like updating a primary care provider, requesting an ID card, or renewing prescription drugs.
We iterate quickly, so Superagent will evolve alongside member expectations, becoming more complete and connected over time. With the launch of GPT-5, we’ve already begun experimenting with using it to code some of our new features, and look forward to using it to unlock Superagent functionality going forward. Future Superagent capabilities will be developed on GPT-5 from day one, so members can benefit immediately from the latest improvements in speed, accuracy, and reliability.
